Back in the old days, it was almost every child's dream to become a pilot. Having a private airplane of your own seems to have been one of life's most important things. For some, those blessed dreams came true. For those who were not fortunate enough to avoid fate's grave misgivings, do not give your hopes up because there is still one more way to enjoy an airplane's flying capabilities. If it's true that a good public flight simulation exercise requires a fast-paced opening sequence and a selection of attractive and extraordinary maneuvering pilots, then it would not apply to watching rubber band powered airplane model lifts.

A demonstration of rubber band powered airplanes was conducted inside a gymnasium. Air conditioners were turned off because the smallest bit of body movement will resemble a tornado and may cause a single airplane to go off-track. The planes overhead, drifted in midair, are very alluring that first-timer viewers get tempted to applaud. However, applause is not the type of appreciation the crafters would like to receive when their planes are floating away. Positive feedback was saved for later after the public exhibition.

According to a person who was watching from the crowd, these wonderful airplanes can give one a mesmerizing experience, peaceful and quiet. She was right. I looked at one lady, her mouth half-opened, and she was completely hypnotized by its very slow, serene movement. I even bet she had no idea why she was staying there sitting while watching at the feather-light planes for more than an hour.

Unbelievably, these planes are created through the use of simple tools that would vary depending on the target outcome you would like to achieve. It involves the concept of a rubber strip that would be used to wind up the system's engine. Outdoor types remain in the air from a few seconds to a few minutes. Indoor types, on the other hand, can stay adrift from a few seconds to more than an hour. The length, weight and thickness of the plane's parts determine how long the model stays in the air.

Around thirty minutes to an hour are invested in the construction of each plane. Delicate operations are performed to maintain overall balance. A series of testing, shaping and crafting are done as well to ensure effectiveness. To some crafters, rubber band powered airplane modeling is a lot like parenting. Any midair mishap really causes the stomach to churn and forces the crafter back to the drawing boards. This is a lot harder to do during the cold and flu season.

Model crafters take pride in creations they cannot manually control and settle for free-flight operations. A retired pilot, who happens to be the reigning king of rubber band powered airplane set, says that his entire hobby can be associated to a scenario when he caught a butterfly in his hands. He says he is the type of person who will mount it, look at it, let it go and still be happy to watch it fly.
