Extra Extra!!! Read All About it -  Faux Finishes Saves The Day!!!

I worked on a cottage in Beautiful Georgian Bay Cottage Country last week with my amazing Muralist and friend Cindy Scaife.  This location is particularly close to my heart because my Family Cottage is also on Georgian Bay.  I have been going to "The Bay" since I was born some 40 odd years ago and each generation since then has had an official baptism in the cool clean blue waters within days of being born.  They have all turned out beautifully if we do say so ourselves.
I digress....This is something I do....
The view may be chilly but it beats anything out there I'd say.  Once again I have to say this:  "I Love My Job" - Ok back to the Cottage...
The cottage is under construction and they have stunning real beadboard through out the main floor.
However the kitchen cabinetry was put in before they had finished and this created a problem - BUT NEVER FEAR CINDY WAS HERE!
She was asked to create "Faux Beadboard" for the intricate space above the beautiful cabinetry. Cindy painted canvas to look like the real bead board off site and brought it to be installed  

We then applied it to the wall with water based wall paper paste and staples.
This was my first time and I learned a few things -

1. Always have the wall painted beneath in the main colour of whatever you are applying, our case the paint colour of the installed bead board ( don't under estimate the importance of priming first it is essential)
2. Paste the back of the canvas and book it like real wallpaper and paste the wall as well.
3. Have a good stapler with lots of staples
4. Don't sweat the small stuff - its painted and can be touched up that is why is so great!
5. Have all touch up paint/glazes on site with you.
6. Paint both sides of the canvas  - it will reduce shrinking when applying wall paper paste.
7. Always have drinking water on site - I can't stress this enough - WATER is the life blood of non-headache fuelled days....
8. Oh Yes, and don't forget to look out the window and enjoy the view.......

The next day once the paste had dried, Cindy went back and removed the staples.  A few paint touch ups and a little plaster to fill in the gaps you couldn't tell the difference.  

The client was ecstatic and so were we!

Now if we could only get them interested in the Fabulous Mural we "see" in their basement.....
