Seeing Images in Brass
There is a couple who engage themselves in brassing but if you ask them they will tell you that this is no easy hobby but one which is very rewarding. Should you wonder what brassing is you should ask them nicely to know about it. The process of brassing takes images of the flat metal figures commonly seen in tombs, images in stones in churches, and other decorative pieces from 13th to 17th Century England and transfers them to paper to make artwork that could be exhibited. You will gain a deeper understanding about photos into paintings by checking out that resource.
Here, the process may seem simple to do but the couple says that this is not the case. They were stationed in England for four years up until about a year ago when they were transferred to an Air Force base. Collecting antiques is a common passion for this couple and they have managed to accumulate a number of antique dishes, utensils, furniture, and other things.
Rather popular in England was brassing and the couple grew to love it when they were there but this activity is relatively unheard of when it comes to the United States. Either engraved flat brass portraits were placed on tombs or the floors of the nearby churches during the 13th Century as a way for the upper class English to honor their dead. There is special black paper that is used to line the brasses and this is rubbed by a special gold colored wax bar resulting to an image transfer.
When it comes to producing an image the wax rubs off on the paper according to ridges in the brass. The couple brought back more than 200 of the paper images and one duplicate brass from the original monument. Treasured most by the couple was the brass of Sir John d' Abernon who died in 1277 in battle. Months ahead of time is the period necessary to book appointments for rubbings because of its popularity as this is the earliest known brass. Visit this site for further information on photograph to painting.
According to the couples, the Vicars in charge of the brasses saw to it that only those with prior experience were allowed to duplicate the brasses. Before duplicates can be made the English requires a waiver to be signed saying that none of the duplicates will be sold and this resulted from the incident involving a bunch of Americans who went there and made duplicates of the brass bringing them home and selling them for $2,000 each in New York. 8,000 remaining monuments are what is left from the large number that was initially put down from 1250 to 1650. Because of these brasses it has been a possibility for the clues from the monuments to help out the historians as they trace the development of clothing, armor, and lifestyle.
Beside a lion pictured at the feet of a knight means that he died in battle, another thing they found out was that a hound at someone's feet meant that he liked to hunt with dogs. Brassing is not an ordinary concept in the US especially since art is just catching up here. When it comes to rubbing this can be used to copy decorative engravings, manhole covers, and even etchings on tombstones. This is a hobby you could enjoy even if the couple needed four hours to accomplish the rubbing of Sir d' Abernon. Schools and art shows have invited the couple to display several of their rubbings.
