Not many people realize the importance of having an efficient AC compressor in their car. It not only helps in cooling the vehicle cabin effectively but also saves fuel and decreases load on the engine. A Compressor is often described as the heart of any Air Conditioning system. The reason being, it generates the pressure required to circulate the refrigerants or freons throughout the Air Conditioning system. It would be worthwhile to consider that it is this refrigerant gas flowing through a closed system called the AC that gets rid of all heat and humidity from the cabin.

 

The whole system works like this; an AC Condenser (located under the hood) condenses the cold refrigerant gas lowering its temperature further. Then a Receiver-Dryer eradicates all moisture present in the gas. This cooled gas then flows through the pipe and reaches the Evaporator (located inside the Car Cabin). When the AC is switched-on, the Evaporator dissipates cold air in the cabin with the help of a fan located behind it. Also, when dusty and humid air in the cabin comes in contact with the cold surface of the Evaporator (consisting of many tubes), it turns to water and is passed out of the car. The refrigerant gas that gets heated in this process travels back to the Condenser to start the cycle again. It is however the Compressor that drives the entire process by producing pressure in the refrigerant gas that allows it to travel throughout the entire system.

 

The Compressor in turn derives all its power from the engine of the vehicle. A Compressor Drive Belt is what connects it with the engine and a running engine is where a compressor derives its motion from. Hence, the condition of the Compressor has an important impact on the load it exerts on the engine and hence on the efficiency of the engine.

 

If you want to maintain an efficient engine along with having an effective Air Conditioner in your car, you cannot neglect looking after the AC Compressor. You can have a qualified technician inspect the Air Conditioning system of your car so that you can detect any minor problems before they can make any significant impact on your vehicle and your wallet.
