How to Test Your Tire Pressure

It is very important that you check your tire pressure on a regular basis. The tires that are on your vehicle may go flat while you are driving if the pressure is too low, which can cause you to become involved in an accident. As a general rule, you should check your tire pressure at least once a week. Most mechanics will check your tire pressure when you get your oil changed, but that only happens every 3,000 or more miles, so this is something that you need to learn how to do on your own. 1. Get a Tire Gauge

You will need to purchase a tire gauge before you can test your tire pressure. You can choose to purchase a simple tire air pressure gauge or you can purchase a digital air pressure gauge. They both do the same job and can be purchased for under $15 from any retailer that carries auto supplies. Many gas stations have a tire gauge that you can use by their air machines, but those are usually inaccurate, so it is best that you purchase your own. The reading that you see on the tire air pressure gauge will be PSI, or pounds per square inch.

2. Testing your Tire Pressure

It is actually very easy to test your tire pressure. If you have recently driven your vehicle, wait at least 3 hours before testing your tire pressure to ensure that you get an accurate reading. Your tires become hot when they are in use, which can impact the tire pressure reading that you get. To test your tire pressure, simply remove the cap from the valve stem on your tire and stick the tire gauge into the stem. If you have a non-digital tire gauge, a metered stick will blow out of the end of the gauge with a reading. If you have a digital gauge, simply keep the gauge in the stem until a reading is displayed. You should go around to each of your tires to test their pressure. The entire process should take you less than 5 minutes.

3. Adjusting your Tire Pressure

You can find out what pressure your tires should be at by opening the driver side door on your vehicle and looking for a sticker on the panel of the door. The sticker will tell you the exact pressure that your tires should be at. If your tires are under inflated, you will need to fill them up. You can go to a gas station and use their air machine to do this or you can purchase an air compressor and fill your tires on your own. As a general rule, the pressure of your tires should never be 5 PSI below or above what is recommended. The tires on your car will inflate fast, so only put a little bit of air in at a time before you stop to re-check the pressure.
