Oil Filter Types

There are three types of oil filter available in the market today. Mechanical, magnetic, centrifugal cartridge or spin-on type and sedimentation type. Each oil filter type has different features and advantages.

Mechanical oil filter type uses a pleated material for its filter media to segregate and suspend particles and contaminants. As the time goes by contaminant built up restricts oil flow, when this happens you need to replace the filter element or if it's a cleanable filter you can periodical cleaning is needed, unlike FES filter.

Cartridge and Spin-on type are the early filters used on most engines. In the 1950's most engines are fitted with spin-on filter. Spin-on filter has metallic canister housing and inside is the filter media called cartridge that is made of different material or metal element.

Magnetic oil filters type use magnet or electro magnet to attract iron particles. The advantage of magnetic type oil filter is periodic replacement is not needed; it simply requires cleaning the magnet surface from particles that are stuck on it.

Sedimentation type allows contaminants to settle at the bottom in the influence of the earth's gravity.

Centrifugal oil filter type traps contaminants by applying centrifugal force when the filter rotates. The oil will enter the rotating chamber, the oil easily pass at the wall of the chamber trapping the contaminant on the filter wall. The filter inside the chamber or housing needs to be replaced periodically because if the contaminants deposited are too thick, it stops the chamber from rotating, this means that the filter is ready for replacement unlike when it is using coalescer element.
