Buying Nubuck and Suede and Keep it Clean
Suede and Nubuck are types of leather that are really quite appealing to the eye, very beautiful and irresistible to touch, however they have no protective coating. When that gorgeous suede or nubuck sofa is sitting on the showroom floor or when those beautiful nubuck boots are propped on the shelf in the shoe shop they just scream "buy me". And we do just that, even though we know fine well. it will be a job to keep them clean saying that we'll make sure we don't wear the boots when it rains or snows, we'll be careful not to scuff them. Or we tell everyone not to put their feet up on that brand new nubuck sofa, and ban the dog from the living room!
Yes, it is worth buying that nubuck protector spray along with the boots and also buy that nubuck cleaning kit for the nubuck sofa. Every little helps to keep them looking good. This is actually the best way to protect your investment, establishing a barrier against soiling and staining. If the dirt does manage to get on your leather items, there's much more chance of it being removed without damage to the leather. The protector will stop a spill from soaking into the leather immediately and the liquid will sit on the surface, giving you time to blot it clean. As there's no protective coating like some other more durable leather finishes, aggressive rubbing of the leather with a everyday cloth or sponge can remove colour from the surface and leave unsightly marks which are pretty impossible to fix. Gentle brushing with a nubuck brush or a nubuck cloth can remove light scuffing.
To sum up, leather shampoo should not be used on nubuck or suede, it's more important to maintain these types of leathers to keep their appearance and just treat any scuffs as they happen. Light soiling and dried stains can often be easily removed with a special Nubuck cloth or a Nubuck sponge or brush. Gently rub the affected error with the nubuck cloth, never rub aggressively. If the leather has been protected with a nubuck product like waterstop, it's much easier to remove the mark if caught on time. Apply a protector like waterstop at least every 6 months.
