Power Grinding Tools Should Be Part Any Tool Collection

Power grinding tools are specialized machines used for grinding materials that you are working on.  What makes them power grinding tools is the fact this it has an abrasive surface used for grinding, and it is powered by an electrical motor.  The grinding surface is attached to a cylinder, or wheel, and rotates by electromotive force.  The operator applies force to the wheel and the surface that is grinded and material is taken away by a process that engineers call tangential stress deformation.

The first type of grinding power tools is the belt grinder.  With belt grinders you will use them polish rough surfaces, fine finishing of surfaces, gross removal of material for finishing, and for removing burrs and taking off edges.  These machines have an abrasive belt attached to a track that is used for grinding away materials.  The operator just places the materials up the belt to remove materials.  The devices do very well for removing any types of coatings on the materials you are working with.  You can get a very fine touch with these machines, and you place the object on the bed and grind with accuracy.  Belt grinders quite often look like belt sanders, but the first is used for metals while the second type is only for wood.

The next type of grinding power tools is the bench grinder, or pedestal grinder, and no serious tool collection should be without one.  They are so named because they are stationary on your work bench and you don’t move them around from job to job.  This is just a shop tool.  There are some models that two abrasive wheels and some that have just one.  In addition they come with different horsepower ratings with light duty bench grinders being around one half HP.  Bench grinders are power grinding tools that also specialize in forming and shaping tools bits and other cutting tools used with lathes.

One type of grinder that is portable is an angle grinder, and this is probably the most common type of grinding power tools.  You will most likely use the grinders in construction or when working with metal.  These are portable power tools that have a handle, a circular abrasive disk powered by a motor, and a wheel guard for safety.  There are many different types of angle grinders available to perform your specific job.  They can be driven with a motor, or air driven.  These grinders are usually rated by how many rpms the wheel rotates, and by the diameter of the arbor.  The size of the grinding disc is usually between four inches and twelve inches.  These tools are really handy because of their portability, and you can easily change out the grinding disc for different type of jobs.
